How a Vibrant Nairobi City MCA is Shaping the Busia County Gubernatorial Race

By Shadrack Nyakoe

Nairobi County Assembly Majority Leader, Peter Anyule Imwatok, is making significant political waves in Busia County, unsettling ODM leaders. Many believe he might be Raila Odinga’s preferred successor to Governor Paul Otuoma.

Top ODM officials are reportedly considering Imwatok, known for his resolute political stance, for the gubernatorial seat—a move causing considerable unease among Busia leaders. Political commentator Prof. Daniel Obwaka noted, “He is a serious politician. When given significant responsibility, Jateso has proven his capability, as seen with his organization of successful demonstrations in Nairobi, sometimes funded personally.”

Imwatok has shifted his focus to Teso and other parts of Busia County, particularly targeting Butula Constituency, where he has strong support. “He provides money, food, and services like medical aid and capacity-building forums. Recently, he was named Teso community spokesperson, signaling his acceptance and influence,” Obwaka emphasized.

Imwatok’s grassroots approach in his home area has seen substantial community backing. His hosting of the Ateker delegation in the Assembly was a notable event, marking him as a significant contender in Busia’s political landscape.

Governor Otuoma, concerned by these developments, has reportedly dispatched his advisors to negotiate with ODM leadership to ease political tensions in the county.

However, Obwaka remarked that these efforts have not been fruitful, describing Otuoma as politically weakened within ODM.

Imwatok’s strategic moves and growing support position him as a formidable candidate in the upcoming Busia gubernatorial race.
