The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife has announced plans to collaborate with the Kisumu County Government and private sector players to transform the region into a beach and water sports hub. This initiative is part of a broader effort to diversify Kisumu’s appeal to both domestic and international tourists.
Tourism Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa emphasized the potential of the region’s lake ecosystem as an alternative to traditional coastal beach destinations. The focus on freshwater experiences such as boating, fishing, and eco-tourism is expected to attract tourists looking for unique activities.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to highlight the region’s natural beauty and cultural richness,” Ololtuaa said during the closing ceremony of this year’s UN World Tourism Day in Kisumu. The region hosted Kenya Tourism Week and various events celebrating cultural exchange and heritage sites like the Kit Mikayi shrine.
During a tour of Kisumu’s attractions, including Ndere Island, Ololtuaa noted that the development of water sports and beach activities could draw a wider audience and boost the local economy. “Partnering with the local government and private sector will help create a vibrant tourism ecosystem,” he added.
The initiative is seen as a significant step towards promoting sustainable tourism, offering new opportunities for local businesses, and enhancing Kisumu’s reputation as a destination for water-based adventures.
