Network International Launches Innovative Instore Payment Solutions in Kenya

Network International, a leading digital commerce enabler across the Middle East and Africa (MEA), has announced the launch of a series of innovative in-person payment solutions in Kenya. This move marks the company’s entry into the country’s in-person payments market, with an ambition to transform the payment landscape across Africa.

Speaking during the launch, Judy Waruiru, Network International Regional Managing Director, Acquiring, East Africa, emphasized the company’s focus on expanding its global reputation for online payments into the African market. “We are introducing what we are known for globally into the African continent with Kenya as a key hub for East Africa,” Waruiru stated.

Kenya’s in-store payment solutions market presents significant growth opportunities. According to the Central Bank of Kenya, there are over 55,000 Point of Sale (POS) machines in the country, a low figure compared to the 7.4 million registered Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Network seeks to bridge this gap by offering cost-effective POS solutions that include QR code payments and boosting card payment adoption.

Network’s POS devices, provided free of charge to merchants, allow businesses of all sizes to accept payments via mobile wallets or cards, catering to various customer preferences. The POS systems feature extended battery life and are designed for smooth integration with existing financial ecosystems, ensuring uninterrupted service for merchants.

“This focus is in line with the Central Bank of Kenya’s National Payments Strategy 2022,” said Ronald Inyangala, Deputy Director of Financial and Sectoral Affairs at The National Treasury. He highlighted the role of new technologies, such as QR code payments and POS systems, in enhancing payment efficiency and driving Kenya’s digital plan.

Mpho Sadiki, Network’s Group Managing Director for Merchant Services, Africa, expressed confidence in scaling these solutions across Kenya. “There is no reason a trader at Maasai Market should not be able to accept card or mobile money payments. We believe simple and convenient digital payment solutions will scale successfully in Kenya as they have in other markets.”

With Africa remaining largely underserved in terms of digital payment solutions, Network International aims to drive growth and reduce reliance on cash through its POS and QR code innovations. The company is optimistic that the shift to digital payments will accelerate across the region, opening new business opportunities for merchants and boosting overall economic growth.
