Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has broken his silence after skipping the debate on the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday, October 8.
The outspoken lawmaker claimed that the country faces more pressing issues that need attention rather than focusing on the impeachment of the deputy president.
“How can I waste my precious whole day discussing Rigathi when we have serious issues like Adani, the new university funding model, SHIF, high cost of living, high taxation, unemployment, among others?” Babu Owino asked.
Babu noted that he was engaged with other important matters affecting his constituents and will appear in Parliament when such issues are presented.
“You’ll see me in parliament when these issues are presented but they will not bring them. I was highly engaged with other important and urgent matters affecting my constituents. The speed with which Rigathi was impeached should be the same speed used to solve Kenyans challenges,” he remarked.
Babu Owino and Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro were notable MPs absent during the motion’s debate in Parliament.
The DP was impeached by the national parliament yesterday after the motion was supported by 281 MPs, and opposed by 44, with 1 member abstaining.
“According to the results of the division on the motion that I’ve just declared, a total of 281 being more than two-thirds of the members of the National Assembly have voted in support of the motion. Article 145 (2a) of the Constitution provides that if a motion under clause 1 is supported by at least two-thirds of the members of the National Assembly, the Speaker shall inform the Speaker of the Senate of the resolution within two days.” National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula announced.
“In this regard, I’ll proceed to discharge the similar duty placed on me by article 145 (2b) of the Constitution under which to notify the Speaker of the Senate of the resolution of the National Assembly.” He added.
