Harambee Stars Face Uphill Battle to Secure AFCON Qualification After Consecutive Losses to Cameroon

Kenya’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have been severely dented following Harambee Stars back-to-back defeats against Cameroon. After suffering a heavy 4-1 loss in Yaoundé, the Harambee Stars were narrowly beaten 1-0 in the return leg played yesterday in Kampala, Uganda.

The two defeats leave Kenya in a precarious position, with just four points from four games. To keep their qualification dreams alive, the Stars must secure victories in both of their remaining matches against Zimbabwe and Namibia, scheduled for November. Winning these games would bring Kenya’s total to 10 points, keeping them in the running for a spot at the tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.

Tough Road Ahead for Harambee Stars

Head coach Engin Firat acknowledged the difficult situation but remained optimistic about Kenya’s chances. “We’re in a tough situation, but our job is to win the last two games and see what happens,” Firat said. For Kenya to qualify, they need six points from their matches against Zimbabwe on November 11 and Namibia on November 19. However, that may not be enough on its own; they would also need Cameroon, who have already qualified, to defeat Zimbabwe in their upcoming match.

If Zimbabwe manages to beat Cameroon, they would advance to AFCON with 11 points, making the outcome of their match against Kenya irrelevant. A draw between Zimbabwe and Kenya would leave the Stars with only five points, thereby ending their hopes of qualification.

Former Players Urge Focus and Determination

Former Kenyan international Fred Ambani emphasized the importance of the Stars winning both of their remaining matches. “The players need to understand the situation and realize they are representing the country. They have to work hard and give their best in the last two games. Anything is possible if they believe,” Ambani said, encouraging the team to rally together and give their best effort on the pitch.

Meanwhile, former Harambee Stars team manager Willis Waliaula urged Kenyan fans not to give up on the team. “Cameroon is a five-time African champion for a reason—they’re not easy to beat. We shouldn’t give up on our team. Let’s support them until the end,” Waliaula asserted, calling for continued fan support as the team gears up for the decisive fixtures in November.

Cameroon Secure Qualification, While Kenya Hopes for a Favor

Cameroon, sitting comfortably with 10 points, have already secured their spot in the AFCON tournament. With their place guaranteed, their final two matches are unlikely to affect their position, and Kenya is counting on them to defeat Zimbabwe to help keep the Stars’ chances alive.

Despite the setbacks, coach Firat and the team remain focused on their mission. Winning against Zimbabwe and Namibia would be a tough ask, but the Harambee Stars know that their fate still lies in their hands if they can deliver two stellar performances next month.
