Five regions to experience heavy rainfall; Kenya Met issues warning

Heavy rainfall is expected in Nairobi, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake region, and the Central highlands for the next couple of days.

The Kenya Meteorological Department explained that the five regions will experience heavy rainfall between yesterday and the weekend.

The weather forecasters urged the public to be on the lookout and be prepared in case of disruptions.

“Rainfall is expected in the Southeastern lowlands, Nairobi, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Central Highlands. Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely, with some areas experiencing very heavy rainfall (>50mm) and isolated storms,” Kenya Met stated.

Earlier this week, the weatherman had noted that below rainfall amounts will be expected before the season’s long-term average in Central Kenya including Nairobi.

Being that the region is among the leading food producers in the country, Kenya Met added that the region could witness a reduction in food production.

Additionally, the weatherman added that there could be lower hydroelectricity generation, leading to increased cost of electricity.

“Parts of northwest, north and central Rift, highlands east of the Rift Valley indicate near to below average. The rest of the country is expected to receive below-normal rainfall,” Kenya Met stated.

Consequently, owing to the projections, Kenya Met advised the government to resort to food imports to boost food security.
