City Lawyer Roughed-up by Workers at an Illegal Construction Site

A violent altercation occurred at an illegal construction site on Taza Lane, off City Park Drive in Parklands, Nairobi, where workers attacked residents and a city lawyer.

The site, located on plot number LR209/7549, had been previously halted by the environment and lands court order in 2022 due to non-compliance with zoning policies and lack of necessary approvals from various government agencies.

 

On Tuesday, area residents, accompanied by lawyer David Ndambiri, confronted the workers to inquire about the ongoing construction despite the court order.

The site lacks approval from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), the National Construction Authority, and the Nairobi County Government.

Despite the site being marked with an X by officials, indicating a stop-work order, the developer repeatedly removed the markings and continued construction.

The confrontation escalated when approximately twenty-five workers, armed with construction tools, attacked the residents and the lawyer.

“Upon asking why they are snubbing court orders, a group of around twenty five workers surrounded us beating us with their construction tools. One of the lady resident who was serious injured was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” one of the residents told our Reporter.

A severely injured female resident was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to an anonymous worker, the attack was orchestrated by Yusuf Asker, director of Ameey Homes, to protect the construction job and ensure continued earnings.

The residents accuse Asker of bribing inspecting officers, as evidenced by CCTV footage.

Frustrated by the lack of enforcement, the residents are now appealing to President William Ruto’s administration for intervention, following an unsuccessful demonstration last week.
