The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has reiterated that bribery no matter how petty has a severe impact on quality, accessibility, and integrity of essential services, eroding trust between citizens and public institutions.
EACC spokesperson Erick Ngumbi stated that corruption perpetuates injustice and harms the most vulnerable.
“The effects of bribery at service delivery points, often viewed as petty corruption, are profound and far-reaching. It perpetuates injustice and harms the most vulnerable among us,” he stated.
The sentiments by Ngumbi come after social media users questioned the anti-corruption commission over the charging of former Likoni DCI, Charles Onyango.
The social users asked the ant-graft authority to focus on bigger corrupt deals that have led to huge losses of public funds.
They questioned why a person would be taken from Oyugis to Mombasa for a Sh20,000 offense.
“Please EACC apply that energy to bigger cases of corruption. Did I read Ksh20,000??? Moving from Mombasa to Oyugis and back to Mombasa? Reeeeeally?????? Did you gain here or recover? Do your maths,” Mwangi Kibuchi questioned.
Yesterday, Former Likoni DCIO Charles Onyango Ka’galo, arrested by the EACC on Tuesday, was arraigned before the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court.
Former Likoni Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer Charles Onyango was yesterday freed on an Sh500,000 bond or a cash bail of Sh200,000 after he was charged with abuse of office, soliciting and receiving a Sh20, 000 bribe.
Appearing before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku, the former police boss pleaded not guilty to all the three counts.
Onyango is accused of taking the Sh20,000 bribe at Lovely Bar and Restaurant in Soko Mjinga area within Mombasa County where he was serving.
EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed that the former DCIO was arrested at his rural home in Oyugis where he lives after retirement by officers from the anti-corruption commission before being held at Port Police Station awaiting his arraignment today.
“The former DCIO was picked up at his rural home in Oyugis yesterday and he will be arraigned today at the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court,” Ngumbi stated.
