Governor Barasa, MP Nabulindo, Echesa summoned over burial chaos

Kakamega governor Fernandes Barasa, former sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa, and Mumias West Member of Parliament Peter Nabulindo have been summoned by the police over chaos witnessed at a burial in Kakamega in the past weekend.

The three will appear before the Kakamega Police headquarters today to record statements and help the police with investigations as they probe to unveil the reasons behind the unrest at the burial of retired Chief Gerald Odongo.

Western Regional Commander Kiprono Langat said the leaders are expected to present themselves for grilling at different times.

On Saturday, political factions clashed at the funeral with more than 100 people being injured and property destroyed.

Two youths have so far been arrested over the incident as police continue to look for more.

The summon of the three politicians comes after the family of the late chief called on law enforcement officers to probe into the events that led to the hurried burial as they termed the chaos as politically induced.

The family said their father was a peaceful man and it was unfair for what happened to them.

“We feel pained, our father was a peaceful man who these two people knew, and for them to come and disrupt his funeral is unfortunate,” Patrick Lutta.

The family says the funeral of their loved one had been planned to the last detail, but signs of trouble began showing early in the day.

“Many people arrived early and occupied the seats in the VIP we had to beg them to leave when the visitors arrived,” He added.

The arrival of politicians in quick succession set off the sequence of events that descended into chaos, denying family members the opportunity to eulogize the former chief and give him a befitting sendoff.

“Before the politicians came in it was calm, there was no problem trouble started when Echesa walked in then Nabulindo, and then the governor,” Lutta stated
