President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will end his presidential re-election campaign, bringing a sudden and humbling end to his half-century-long political career and scrambling the fight for the White House less than four months before Election Day.

Biden, 81, was unable to counter the belief within his party that he was too frail to serve and would be defeated by Donald Trump this November.

He endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee to succeed him.
“While I have intended to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.” Biden stated in a letter posted on X.

“I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.” The letter added.

Biden thanked Harris for “being an extraordinary partner” in his letter and then endorsed her in a subsequent post.

“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President,” Biden posted. “And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.”

In a statement, Harris thanked Biden for “his extraordinary leadership” and his “remarkable legacy of achievement.”

“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and I intend to earn and win this nomination,” Harris said. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party — and unite our nation — to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” she said.
