Veteran Journalist Macharia Gaitho has been abducted by unknown individuals at the Karen police station.

Macharia Gaitho was with his son when they were cut off by a Subaru as they left home.

The journalist opted to drive off to Karen Police Station where he was forcefully taken and driven off to an unknown place.

In a video seen by the Corporate Watch, the journalist was shoved into a white Probox at the Karen station by people in civilian clothes as police looked.

The video was recorded by his son.

However, the Director of Criminal Investigations Amin Mohamed in a statement said Gaitho’s arrest was a case of mistaken identity.

He has since been freed.

“We are sorry to Gaitho. It was a case of mistaken identity.” Amin said.

The DCI boss said they were looking for a different person who is also called Gaitho.

The journalist’s daughter has since confirmed that the father was taken back to the Karen Police Station aboard the same vehicle he was bundled into.

“I’m with my Dad.  He’s just been brought to Karen police station by the car that abducted him.” Anita Gaitho said in an X post.

“He’s safe although they roughed him up a bit. We’re making the abduction report right now.” She added.

This comes in the wake of abductions as a result of the anti-government demonstrations that began from the protest against the ‘punitive’ Finance Bill, 2024.

According to reports by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), a total of 59 people have been abducted or are missing.
