Ministry of Health Clears Road for Normal Use After Poisonous Spillage

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Kiambu County Government, has declared the area in Rironi, Kiambu County safe for normal use following a sodium cyanide chemical spill.
The incident occurred when a truck carrying cylinders of the hazardous sodium cyanide chemical overturned on Saturday, causing a dangerous spill in the Kambembe area.
The authorities have successfully cleared the site, ensuring it is safe for regular operations.
However, several drums containing the toxic chemical are still unaccounted for and are believed to be in the possession of individuals within the surrounding community.
“We want to remind the public that sodium cyanide is extremely toxic, and even small amounts of ingestion or inhalation can be fatal. We call upon members of the public not to touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing protective clothing,” she said.
To address the potential risks, the Ministry has initiated a risk communication and community engagement campaign through churches, primary care networks, community health promoters, National Government Administration Officers, and the Nyumba Kumi initiative.
“We will be tracking, monitoring, and securing any chemicals that may have wrongfully ended up in the community,” the Principal Secretary said, urging those who have come into contact with the chemical to seek immediate attention at the nearest health facility.
A temporary station has been established near the incident site to provide reviews, advice, and support for those who may have difficulty accessing health facilities.
Experts caution that sodium cyanide poses a significant threat to aquatic life and requires proper handling measures, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and eye protection, to prevent direct exposure.
