Mutuini County Hospital Set for Major Upgrade to Level 5 Facility

Nairobi County’s Mutuini Hospital is set to undergo a massive expansion this year, elevating it to a Level 5 facility.

According to the hospital’s CEO, Fredrick Obwanda, the upgrade includes the construction of a new 400-bed facility, which is already underway. This will significantly increase the hospital’s capacity from the current 40 beds to over 400.

“When completed, we shall have a more expanded outpatient department, ensuring that we serve more patients efficiently,” Obwanda said.

The ambitious project has been backed by Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration allocating Ksh 238 million in the 2024/2025 budget to facilitate the expansion.

The upgraded hospital will include critical units such as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU) for paediatric, neonatal and adults, expanded laboratories, a larger pharmacy, an imaging unit, a theatre, a newborn unit, a gynecology department, a renal unit, a nutrition clinic, and a specialized physician care clinic. This comprehensive expansion aims to provide a 360-degree healthcare service provision to the residents of Dagoretti, Westlands, and the greater West Boroughs area.

“With 30 doctors currently serving the hospital, we are experiencing a growing number of patients, and this expansion will enable us to meet the increasing demand,” Obwanda added.

Once completed, Mutuini Hospital will play a crucial role in decongesting major referral hospitals in Nairobi, offering specialized treatment closer to the people.
