NTSA Pledges Enforcement on National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028

In an effort to tackle the alarming rate of road accidents in Kenya, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Director General George Njao announced the enforcement of the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028, which was launched by the president in April.
Speaking at the National Helmet Wearing Coalition board meeting at NTSA headquarters in Nairobi, Njao praised the coalition’s efforts to raise awareness about motorcycle rider and passenger safety.
“In the coming weeks, I will be meeting with all stakeholders to plan the implementation. We have lost too many lives on our roads; enough is enough,” Njao stated. “We are done with boardroom meetings; it’s time to act.”
The third phase of the motorcycle safety campaign, a one-and-a-half-year project funded by FIA and Transaid, begins this month and runs through December 2025.
Transaid Programs Support Manager Jason Finch highlighted the push for a helmet testing lab in Kenya, which is in high demand.
“It’s important now that Kenya has a National Road Safety Action Plan, the first of its kind in Africa, and with the right stakeholders, the testing lab will be a good place to begin,” Finch added.

Njao also advocated for all motorcycle riders to be registered with a Sacco for better organization and outreach.
Transaid Kenya boss Grace Wahome noted positive responses from Nairobi riders, prompting expansion to other regions.
“Our main goal is to enhance riders’ safety by promoting the use of quality helmets. We have approached many saccos in Nairobi, which have embraced our agenda,” she said.
The National Helmet Wearing Coalition was established in 2021 by former President Uhuru Kenyatta and then FIA President Jean Todt to promote helmet use among motorcycle riders in Kenya.
