Rironi residents warned over missing harmful sodium cyanide containers

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has cautioned Kenyans after a truck carrying sodium cyanide overturned in the Rironi area along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

In a notice shared yesterday, NEMA disclosed that several containers containing sodium cyanide chemical were missing following the incident warning the public to report to the nearest police station if they locate the containers

The authorities warned the public that the chemical is extremely dangerous.

“The truck was carrying toxic chemicals, sodium cyanide which is dangerous and harmful to human health and the environment. Several containers have been reported missing. The public is cautioned that the contents of the containers are extremely harmful and should immediately report to the nearest police station or chief’s office if they spot the containers.” NEMA stated.

NEMA warned the public not to come into contact with the contents of the containers, which are white substances in pellet form.

This comes after the Ministry of Health over the weekend cautioned the public against coming into contact with the chemical.

Health PS Mary Muthoni disclosed that ingestion or inhalation of even small amounts can be fatal.

“Exposure can cause immediate symptoms such as headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting. Severe exposure can lead to loss of consciousness and convulsions within minutes.” She Muthoni cautioned.

“Protective Measures Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and eye protection is essential when handling sodium cyanide to prevent direct exposure.” She added.

She urged the public to cooperate with the emergency response teams as they worked to contain the situation.
