President William Ruto has called upon Kenyans to enroll in the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) as the government initiates the rollout of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Speaking during the opening of the Belgut Technical Training Institute and Belgut TTI Digital Hub in Kericho County, President Ruto emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring comprehensive healthcare access for all citizens.
Under the SHIF program, the President highlighted that even low-income earners can contribute as little as Ksh.300 per month, with the government covering those who are unable to afford it.
President Ruto underscored the integration of advanced technology within SHIF to combat wastage and corruption, ensuring that public funds are efficiently utilized to deliver quality healthcare services.
Moreover, President Ruto reassured citizens that the government is taking decisive steps to prevent financial distress due to medical expenses, including the establishment of the Critical Illness Fund to address conditions like Cancer. He affirmed that no Kenyan will be compelled to sell assets to settle medical bills under this initiative.
Addressing other pressing issues, President Ruto vowed stringent measures against the sale of illicit alcohol and drugs, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of Kenyans.
He also reiterated the importance of prudent fiscal management to mitigate debt risks, stressing the utilization of local taxes to drive national development.
Highlighting efforts to tackle unemployment, President Ruto cited initiatives such as the affordable housing program and digital hubs, which have generated employment opportunities. He outlined plans to expand Internet connectivity to millions of homes, trading centers, and markets to foster economic growth.
President Ruto revealed plans for the construction of 5,000 houses under the affordable housing program in Kericho County, expected to create over 10,000 jobs. Additionally, he disclosed the expansion and upgrade of the Kericho Airstrip into an airport to enhance regional transport.
President Ruto also inaugurated the Kericho Passport Centre, bringing passport services closer to residents. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed confidence in President Ruto’s leadership towards achieving economic prosperity.
