Seventy two stolen electric gadgets recovered by sleuths in Mpeketoni

Sleuths in Mpeketoni, Lamu county have recovered more than 70 suspected stolen mobile phones, laptops and tablets in an ongoing crackdown on suspicious phone repair stalls.

The operation is which is aimed at combating the electronic theft surge in the area led to the arrest of four suspects.

Detectives who led the operation said they also recovered assorted M-Kopa mobile phones, flashing tools and hard drives.

The operation was staged by the sleuths following complaints that there was a surge in the theft of mobile phones.

According to the officers, the gadgets are usually reconfigured at local repair shops and sent to other parts of the country or neighbouring countries where they are resold.

An analysis of some of the recovered gadgets has revealed the victims were violently robbed of the gadgets.

Investigation have been launched to get those behind the robbery.

This comes after police spokesperson Resila Anyamgo recently warned second-hand mobile phone dealers and the electronic engineers or repairers handling the gadgets they will face serious charges when investigations are completed.

“If you are a mobile phone engineer or repairer stop handling stolen gadgets. You become an accomplice in the crime when found.” She said.

She said detectives are now pursuing good leads on the issue and they aim to address the menace.

She encouraged those whose gadgets are stolen to always report the same to police.
