Surgeons at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital have successfully removed seven sewing needles from the body of a three-year-old girl. A team of four surgeons led by, Prof. Tenge Kuremu, conducted the operation at Majaliwa Theatre which took one-hour and 45 minutes. The baby had abdominal complaints for the past one year. She was referred from Kapenguria County Referral Hospital to MTRH on 1st May, 2018. Speaking during a press briefing on 5th May, 2018 at Chandaria Cancer Chronic Diseases Centre, Hospital CEO ,Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa,commended the surgical team for a job well done. “The child who was operated on today is doing well and is recuperating. We shall only discharge her when we are sure that her safety back home is guaranteed,” he stated. He said that the Hospital will continue training more specialists in diverse fields to improve healthcare service delivery to Kenyans. “We are training many Registrars from different Counties. This team will offer crucial services back in their health facilities,” he added. This is one of the ways of contributing towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The complete surgery team included; Prof. Tenge Kuremu, Dr. Philippe Kuradusenge, Dr. Mirwoba Nyakerario, Dr. Vivian Cheboiywo, Dr. Josephat Kerema, Peter Chelimo, Ann Sipoche and Peter Cherutich.
The child’s grandparents; Mr John Pkemboi Ling’aa and Emily Ling’aa expressed appreciation to the Hospital and the team of doctors who undertook the operation.
“This operation has been a big relief for us and all I can say is I extend my gratitude to the team of doctors who performed the surgery,” said Mzee Ling’aa.
