President William Ruto has congratulated Paul Kagame of Rwanda on his re-election for the fourth term as president.
Ruto has wished Kagame well as he begins yet another term in office even as he expressed optimism that Rwanda will continue to achieve great development under his leadership.
“On behalf of the people and Government of Kenya, I have the pleasure of conveying my warmest congratulations upon your re-election to serve a further term as President of the Republic of Rwanda. We celebrate with you the sovereign choice of the people of Rwanda and wish you success as you continue steering your country in the path of peace, stability, and posterity.” He said in his congratulatory message.
The head of state promised Kagame that Kenya would continue to work closely with Rwanda for the benefit of the citizens of the two countries.
“I look forward to continuing working with you in regional and Pan-African affairs in strengthening the bonds of solidarity and fraternity between the peoples of Kenya and Rwanda.” He added.
Rwanda held its elections on Monday this week and results that were released by the National Electoral Commission showed Kagame had 7,099,810 votes, representing 99.15 per cent of the total votes tallied.
Kagame has been President of Rwanda since the year 2000.
The incumbent has been at the helm of Rwandan politics since his rebel forces took power at the end of the 1994 genocide which killed some 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
He has dominated every election since becoming president in 2000, with over 90 per cent of the vote.
In 2017, he won with a staggering 99 per cent.
