Environment CS Aden Duale Orders NEMA to Crack Down on Noise and Environmental Polluters
Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has instructed the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to initiate a comprehensive crackdown on various forms of environmental pollution, with a particular focus on noise polluters.
The directive, issued on Tuesday, marks the beginning of a nationwide anti-pollution campaign led by the NEMA Police Unit.
CS Duale emphasized that the crackdown will target a range of pollution sources, including noise from clubs, night-time construction activities, improper waste disposal, and air quality violations. “The era of impunity by club owners and private developers must end,” stated Duale, signaling a firm stance against those who breach environmental regulations.
The move is part of a broader strategy to address the increasing concerns over pollution, which has become a major issue for many residents across urban areas in Kenya. Duale specifically called out clubs located in residential neighborhoods, warning that they will no longer be allowed to operate unless they adhere to strict soundproofing and environmental standards.

Last week, CS Duale ordered the immediate closure of Fay’s Bistro club in Kilimani after numerous complaints from residents about persistent noise pollution. The closure serves as a clear message to other establishments. “Let this serve as a stern warning, any club operating in residential areas that continues to play loud music will face similar action. This impunity will not be tolerated,” he asserted.
Under NEMA’s new mandate, the authority will conduct regular inspections and enforce compliance among businesses, construction sites, and other entities to ensure they meet the required environmental guidelines. The initiative aims not only to curb noise pollution but also to address other issues such as waste management and air quality, enhancing the overall living conditions for residents.
