Former Likoni Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) Charles Onyango will be arraigned today at the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court following his arrest by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed the former DCIO was arrested at his rural home in Oyugis by officers from the anti-corruption commission before being held at Port Police Station awaiting his arraignment today.
“The former DCIO was picked up at his rural home in Oyugis yesterday and he will be arraigned today at the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court,” Ngumbi confirmed.
The anti-graft spokesperson said the Commission is approaching bribery cases with the same vigor and determination applied to grand corruption.
Ngumbi underscored the EACC’s commitment to tackling corruption at all levels of the public service.
The former police boss is expected to face charges related to corrupt practices during his tenure in office.
This comes after in 2019 while serving as the DCIO for Likoni Onyango was arrested by EACC officers who found him taking a Sh20,000 bribe at the Mtongwe, Likoni.
He was later released on a cash bail as investigations were ongoing.
Early this week, EACC Chairman David Oginde said Kenyan professionals, especially Lawyers, Accountants, and Engineers, are at the heart of the theft of public resources in the country.
He called on those involved in this illicit venture to use their expertise to serve the public good.
“Good professions have been destroyed because people engage in crime and demand bribes every time before offering services. Mega corruption facilitated by people in service would die if professionals would refuse to be used,” Oginde stated.
“Some people who engage in corruption cannot design some of the scandals. They are facilitated by intelligent professionals who show them what to do and how to do it and you’ll always see there is a brilliant mind behind the design and execution of the scandals,” he added.
