Kenyan Officer Succumbs to Injuries Following Gang Attacks in Haiti

A Kenyan police officer deployed to Haiti as part of the multinational peacekeeping mission tragically died on Sunday, February 23, 2025. This was after an intense clash with armed gangs in the Segur-Savien area.

The officer was seriously injured during the operation and was airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, the officer succumbed to his injuries.

His death was confirmed by Force Commander Godfrey Otunge, who expressed his deepest condolences to the officer’s family and colleagues. The officer, whose identity has not been publicly released, becomes the first casualty from the Kenyan contingent since its deployment in June 2024.

Kenya is leading a multinational security mission (MSS)aimed at supporting the Haitian National Police in their ongoing fight against violent gangs that have been terrorizing the nation. Since the deployment, over 500 personnel from several countries, including Kenya, Jamaica, Belize, and others, have worked together to stabilize the country and combat the growing criminal activity.

The multinational force’s mission in Haiti is crucial as the country faces escalating violence, with gangs controlling large areas of Port-au-Prince and surrounding regions. The mission has been challenging, with officers facing armed resistance and constant danger while trying to restore peace.

However, the mission is currently under additional strain due to a recent financial cut imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The decision, which reduced U.S. financial support for international peacekeeping operations, has left a significant gap in the resources available for the MSS mission.

Critics have raised concerns that such financial cuts may hinder the effectiveness of peacekeeping efforts, which requires sustained support to counter the growing criminal violence.

The Kenyan government has reaffirmed its commitment to Haiti’s peace and stability despite the financial challenges.
