EACC Recovers Ksh. 5 Billion Worth of Land and Assets from Grabbers

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has returned 35 title deeds for corruptly acquired public land, valued at approximately Ksh. 5 billion to the government.

These assets were recovered on behalf of various public institutions from land grabbers.

Additionally, EACC handed over Ksh. 511,365,927.80 in unexplained wealth recovered from public officials to the National Treasury.

The recovered assets, handed over to President William Ruto at State House on September 11, 2024, are part of Ksh. 28 billion in stolen public property traced and reclaimed by the commission over the past five years.

Asset tracing is a key strategy in eliminating corruption by removing the financial benefits gained from corrupt practices.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak highlighted several examples of recovered properties, including a 1.88-acre parcel of land in Kisumu belonging to the Judiciary, valued at Ksh. 1.4 billion.

Speaking at the event, Mbarak emphasized the importance of asset tracing and recovery in dismantling the rewards of corruption.

“We are here to witness the handing over of 35 titles, measuring approximately 18.71 acres with a total value of about Ksh. 5 billion,” Mbarak stated, adding that more recoveries are in progress.

While expressing confidence in the EACC’s efforts to combat corruption, Mbarak called for increased funding to enhance the commission’s effectiveness.

He noted that the commission is currently operating with a workforce of 780 employees, well below the approved level of 1,108 staff.
