Kenya’s Tea Exports to Sudan in Limbo as Diplomatic Tensions Escalate

The business community in the country have started feeling the heat after the government of Sudan recalled its ambassador from the country.

This was raised during a media briefing held at the East African Tea Trade Association [EATTA] Tea Centre in Mombasa county.

Tea Buyers Association chairman Peter Kimanga told the day’s session that about 207 of 40 feet containers are stuck at the port of Mombasa.

He confirmed each of the 40 feet container stuck at the port has the capacity to carry almost 200 bags at approximately US 2 dollars under value added.

“It means they are already branded with the importers’ names,” he pointed out.

The Tea Buyers Association chairman said once the tea is branded the product can’t be sold to another market.

Kimanga, who was flanked by EATA Managing Director George Omuga and EATTA Chairman Arthur Sewe, told the media to make matters worse the commodity bears the country of destination.

On his part Omuga downplayed the diplomatic fiasco between Kenya and Sudan when he was put to task by journalists saying he is confident the appeal they made to the government will bear fruit.

He told the media they are have taken a bold step by asking the government to intervene.

“We don’t have the capacity to talk to the Sudan government otherwise we would have done so directly,” he said.
