Kenya Eyes Regional Leadership by Strengthening Cybersecurity and AI Education

As technology rapidly advances, Kenyan stakeholders in the cybersecurity and technology sectors are calling for greater emphasis on cybersecurity education, particularly in its connection to Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Speaking at a recent conference, experts highlighted the need for a coordinated approach to build a secure digital environment.

David Njoga, Head of Cybersecurity Strategy, Policy, and Standards at the National Computer and Cybercrime Coordination Committee (NC4), stressed the critical role of cybersecurity in supporting Kenya’s digital ecosystem.

“Our mandate is to coordinate cybersecurity activities involving public entities, private sectors, academia, and others. We aim to build trust and resilience in the digital space, aligning with the Kenya Kwanza administration’s vision for a digital superhighway and creative economy,” said Dr. Njoga.

With over 90% of Kenya’s ICT infrastructure owned by the private sector, Dr. Njoga underscored the importance of collaboration to address cyber threats. Companies like Microsoft and Amazon have already launched initiatives to strengthen Kenya’s cybersecurity landscape, such as Microsoft’s cybersecurity training programs for Kenyan citizens.

CyberPro Global Champions Training and Industry Collaboration

CyberPro Global, a leading cybersecurity training organization, emphasized the need for continuous skill development and awareness.

Executive Chairman Preston Odera highlighted the organization’s commitment to updating its curriculum to meet evolving industry needs.

“Training is crucial, and collaboration between the government and private sector is key to tackling emerging cyber threats,” said Odera.

Universities are also stepping up to address the skills gap.

Michael Kenyo, Head of the Department of Computer Information Science at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, detailed their partnership with CyberPro Global to run a cybersecurity academy.

“Our goal is to ensure students are equipped with the skills to advance Kenya’s cybersecurity agenda, especially in the integration of AI,” he said.

Government Partnerships in Cybersecurity Training

The Kenya School of Government has joined forces with institutions like NC4 and CyberPro Global to train public officials in securing sensitive government information.

“We are upskilling officers nationwide, from mid-level to senior officials, in line with the government’s digital economy strategy,” a representative said.

Positioning Kenya as a Regional Cyber security Leader

With growing collaboration among the government, private sector, and academia, Kenya is working to establish itself as a leader in cyber security in the region. Efforts to integrate AI with cyber security and equip professionals with cutting-edge skills are expected to strengthen the country’s resilience against cyber threats while enabling it to fully leverage digital opportunities.
