Azimio party leader Raila Odinga has officially declared interest in the African Union (AU) commission chair position. Raila has said he has made the decision following wide ‘consultations’ and that he is suitable for the job.
“I am inclined to accept the challenge and I am ready and I offer myself to be of service.” Raila said.
He added that he has . I have asked his friend for a former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo to be a good ambassador and talk to other people to support his bid.
The outspoken opposition leader said that serving in the African Union in the capacity of a high representative, gave him the advantage to learn about every African country adding that it will be an added advantage as he believes that walking together with the countries who are member states of AU will make the continent great.
Raila is seeking to replace Chad’s Moussa Faki Mahamat’s term set to end. Candidates for the AU chairman post must be fronted by the member states meaning Raila must be fronted by President Ruto.
The procedure requires the host country to nominate a candidate then mobilize support from across the region and continent.
By Ruto fronting the opposition leader, it means there will be a change in the political landscape-‘handshake.’ It would also remove the five times presidential candidate from the 2027 race triggering new alignments.
The position requires a neutral person with no political interest across the continent. The holder of the office plays a major role in International happenings including elections, conflicts and development, not only in Africa but globally.
