Kenya’s social innovations shortlisted for Nestlé’s 2018 CSV Prize

Four Kenyan social enterprises have been shortlisted for an international Ksh54 million (CHF 500,000) prize for their efforts at addressing needs in good nutrition, safe water and economic opportunities.

TruTrade, Farmers Pride, SimGas Kenya and Amref Kenya’s Leap, are Kenyan participants that are part of the 56 organizations shortlisted globally for Nestlé’s 2018 Creating Shared Value Prize, which attracted over 1000 entries from Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and the Middle East.

TruTrade is a social enterprise that provides smallholder farmers with a reliable route to market and fair prices for their produce. Amref’s LEAP is a scalable, integrated mLearning solution offering training opportunities, peer collaboration, real time evaluation and supervision.

Farmers Pride links rural farmers to certified inputs, services and information with the aim of improving their income, productivity and nutrition while SimGas Kenya provides biogas-powered milk chilling solutions that enable off-grid dairy farmers to store, deliver and sell the highest possible quantity of milk.

For this year’s CSV prize Nestlé is partnering with Ashoka, the world’s leading network of systems-changing social entrepreneurs. Together they are looking for the next big social innovation that will create the most value and make the most difference to today’s society.

Five finalists will be chosen to pitch their ideas at the 2018 Creating Shared Value Forum in Brazil. The winner will be announced on 16 March and receive prizes totaling CHF 500,000 to help develop their initiative.

The Creating Shared Value Prize, established eight years ago, supports social entrepreneurs tackling the world’s biggest issues in nutrition, water and rural development. Winners receive crucial funding to scale up their initiatives and make a lasting impact on people’s lives.
