Activist Morara Kebaso Urges Peace Amid Tensions with DRC

Amid rising tensions between Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenyan youth leader Morara Kebaso has issued a plea for calm, urging Congolese citizens not to attack Kenyans or the Kenyan embassy in their country.

In a statement directed at the people of the DRC on his social media account, Kebaso clarified that ordinary Kenyans have not benefited from any financial dealings related to mining activities in South Kivu, allegedly linked to President William Ruto.

He asserted that any proceeds from such ventures go into the president’s personal accounts rather than Kenya’s national coffers.

“We are also suffering. We support your fight for economic freedom. We feel your pain,” Kebaso stated, emphasizing solidarity with the Congolese people.

He highlighted the cultural and social ties between the two nations, pointing out that many Congolese have found a home in Kenya, where they are treated well.

He also underscored Kenya’s appreciation for Congolese music, noting that rhumba musicians frequently perform in the country and are well compensated.

“We are not your enemies. In fact, we share an enemy. Therefore, we are comrades in the struggle,” he concluded, calling for unity rather than hostility.

The message comes as anti-Kenyan sentiments escalate in parts of the DRC, fueled by economic grievances and allegations of foreign exploitation of the country’s natural resources.

It remains to be seen whether such appeals for peace and solidarity will ease the tensions between the two nations.
