Grassroots social justice movement Bunge La Mwananchi has announced its plans for 2025, with a central focus on uniting Kenyan youth through a football tournament. The announcement was made during a sitting held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at the Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi.
The football tournament will initially involve youth from Nairobi’s 17 constituencies and later expand to all 47 counties. According to Bunge President Francis Awino, the initiative is aimed at fostering unity and amplifying the voices of young people.
“We must come together to ensure our voices are heard and demand accountability from our leaders. I’ll ensure all teams are fully equipped with uniforms before the tournament begins,” said Awino.
The movement also celebrated its 2024 accomplishments, which included raising public awareness to reduce road accidents and positively impacting communities through initiatives like food donations.
Calls for Political Action
Prominent Bunge member Joshua Orwa Omondi, known as Omosh One Hour Jakababa, declared his intention to contest for the Karen Ward MCA position in the 2027 elections. He also called for Bunge La Mwananchi to register as a political party to support young, financially disadvantaged leaders with political aspirations.
“Let us set aside our differences and unite for a common purpose. Registering Bunge La Mwananchi as a political party will give youth a platform to achieve their political ambitions,” said Omosh.
Condemnation of Inaction by Politicians
The group criticized elected leaders who fail to represent their constituents. Kiberenge Junior, a member of the Jacaranda Bunge, singled out Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as some of the few leaders consistently advocating for the people.
“We will hold non-performing and corrupt leaders accountable. Those elected to serve the people but instead loot are conning Kenyans, and we stand against this, regardless of political alliances,” stated Kiberenge.
Support for Raila Odinga
The movement also expressed its support for Raila Odinga’s candidacy in the African Union chairperson elections scheduled for February 2025. Members prayed for his victory, describing it as a significant step for Kenya and Africa as a whole.
As 2025 begins, Bunge La Mwananchi remains steadfast in its mission to unite youth, hold leaders accountable, and create a platform for change.
