The Ministry of Education has announced the postponement of reopening of schools by one week to May 6, 2024 due to ongoing rains.
In his communication on Monday morning, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu said the ministry had received data showing some schools adversely affected by floods caused by the ongoing rains hence the postponement.
“In the face of ongoing rains, the Ministry of Education directs that the reopening of schools will be pushed forward by one week to May 6, 2024 following data by field officers for various basic education learning institutions. This is because various schools have been adversely affected by floods in the various regions across the Country.” Machogu stated.
The CS said the effects of floods in some schools is severe and it would be inhumane to release kids back to school without proper measures being put in place.
He said the ministry will be working closely with the Relevant stakeholders to ensure measures are in place to mitigate the adverse effects of rains in schools.
The Kenya Meteorological Department Director David Gikungu issued a warning that there will be an increase in the rains for the next seven days.
