Empowering West Pokot’s Dairy Future Growth through Collaboration and Innovation

A transformative chapter has been set for West Pokot’s dairy sector as leaders, farmers, and partners united to drive progress with the West Pokot Dairy Farmers Field Day at Kapsait Primary School bringing together over 2,000 farmers, the Deputy Governor, County Assembly Speaker, Kenya Dairy Board (KDB) leadership, CEOs, and agencies to share expertise, resources, and strategies for boosting production, quality, and livelihoods.

Sustainable Practices, Modern Techniques, and Farmer Empowerment…
The momentum began with a warm welcome dinner hosted by Governor Simon Kachapin, who reaffirmed the commitment to partnering with KDB in advancing sustainable practices, modern techniques, and farmer empowerment.

This collaboration paved the way for key activities, including the Animal Vaccination Drive led by the Director of Veterinary Services and county officials. By safeguarding livestock health through critical vaccines, the initiative aims to reduce disease outbreaks, enhance milk quality, and secure stable incomes for farmers.

A highlight was the visit to Lelan Dairies, a shining example of West Pokot’s dairy potential. From humble beginnings in 2009, this cooperative now supports 6,000 farmers, collects 25,000 liters daily, and partners with processors like Brookside Dairy and New KCC.

With 132,545 dairy cows producing 147.3 million liters annually, the county’s dairy revolution thrives through innovation—pasteurization, milk ATMs, and vibrant collection centers—bridging gaps in nutrition and market access.
Together with stakeholders, KDB is milking West Pokot’s potential through strengthened partnerships, cutting-edge practices, and unwavering dedication to a healthier, more prosperous dairy future.
