The government has announced its readiness to collaborate with the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) to address the issue of unlicensed individuals operating pharmacies and chemists nationwide.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed the government’s concern over the increasing number of unlicensed pharmacies and chemists run by unqualified individuals. He questioned how such establishments could operate without certified professionals in the field.
“The government is prepared to work closely with the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) to crack down on quacks running pharmacies and chemists across the country,” Gachagua stated.
He assured that the government would provide the necessary security and intelligence support for these operations.
Speaking at the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya Conference held at Sarova Whitesands Beach Hotel in Nyali constituency, Mombasa County, Gachagua urged the PSK to partner with the government to effectively eliminate unlicensed operators.
Gachagua called for the arrest and prosecution of individuals running unlicensed pharmacies and chemists. He also recommended the destruction of medicines stored in these unauthorized facilities.
“The Regional Commissioner Coast, Rhoda Onyancha, has been praised for her efforts in the war against drugs. I urge her to intensify efforts to tackle this issue,” he said.
