Government Constructs a Pedestrian Underpass to Improve Traffic Flow in Nairobi

By Shadrack Nyakoe

The government is investing Ksh. 2,017,116,059 in the construction of the Greenpark Terminus Pedestrian Underpass Network at the Uhuru Highway-Haile Selassie intersection roundabout.

The project aims to address pedestrian traffic conflicts and reduce delays, enhancing safety and efficiency for road users in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

According to Engineer Jared Makori from the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA), the underpass, funded through the Road Maintenance Levy Fund, is currently 32% complete.

It is expected to improve the economic and social service sectors by reducing pedestrian traffic congestion.

Makori highlighted that over 21,000 pedestrians use the roundabout daily, with 8,500 crossing the road during peak hours. The project will offer additional benefits, including reduced travel times, more efficient transport services, improved logistics, and job creation during its construction.

The underpass construction, undertaken by China Road and Bridge Corporation (Kenya), began on March 13, 2024, and is scheduled for completion by March 13, 2025. The project will feature four underpasses with a total length of 176 meters. The design, which omits stairs, includes a 106-meter underpass across Haile Selassie Avenue, another across Uhuru Highway, and additional crossings at Upperhill and Westlands Bound.

During a site visit by the National Government Development Regional/County Implementation Coordination and Management Committee (NGD-RICMC), Nairobi Regional Commissioner Katee Mwanza urged government officials to ensure timely completion of the project.

Once finished, the underpass network is expected to enhance safety, promote sustainable transportation, and boost economic activity in Nairobi’s bustling CBD.
