The government has released Ksh3.2 billion for the June 2024 payment of the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Programme, aimed at supporting the country’s most vulnerable populations. The announcement was made on Monday by Joseph Motari, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizens Affairs.
According to PS Motari, a total of Ksh3,215,992,000 has been disbursed to 1,607,996 beneficiaries, marking a significant increase from the 1,037,773 beneficiaries in May 2024. This upscaling includes the onboarding of 570,263 new beneficiaries. Payment is set to commence on Wednesday this week.
This expansion follows President William Ruto’s directive to increase the programme’s reach to 2.5 million beneficiaries, to be implemented in phases.
“The Ministry has onboarded 570,263 new beneficiaries. The total number of beneficiaries in the June payroll is 1,607,996 up from 1,037,733 in May 2024. All those new beneficiaries who have opened bank accounts will be paid from Wednesday,” stated PS Motari.
The Inua Jamii programme is a government cash transfer initiative designed to support the most vulnerable members of the community. It provides a stipend to help cushion recipients from poverty and hunger, thereby improving their overall quality of life. The programme targets persons aged 70 years and above, orphans and vulnerable children, as well as people living with severe disabilities who lack other sources of income or pensions.
The government’s commitment to enhancing social protection through the Inua Jamii programme underscores its dedication to addressing poverty and ensuring the well-being of its most vulnerable citizens. As payments commence this week, the expanded reach of the programme is expected to provide much-needed relief and support to an increased number of beneficiaries across the country.
