The government has prioritized the full implementation of police reforms this financial year, with the modalities of this process discussed in a meeting chaired by Interior Ministry CS Kithure Kindiki. During the session, top police command reviewed time-bound targets and Key Performance Indicators for the reform phase.
This comes after the gazettement of a 13-member technical committee tasked with reviewing previous reports and harmonizing them with the recommendations of the Maraga Taskforce. The goal is to provide informed legal advice and draft bills and policy proposals to guide reforms within the National Police Service and the National Youth Service (NYS).
The committee will focus on legislative changes, policy drafting, and public consultations over the next nine months, specifically addressing proposals from the Chief Justice (Rtd) David Maraga-led reforms.
The meeting was attended by Acting Inspector General (IG) Gilbert Masengeli, who also serves as Deputy Inspector-General of the Administration Police Service (APS), Deputy IG of the Kenya Police Service (KPS) Eliud Lang’at, and the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohamed Amin.
