In the just concluded Mexico’s election on 3 June 2024, emotional moments have been experienced as the first woman president has been elected.

The last time the country had a female president was 200 years ago.

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has congratulated the 61-year-old former mayor and president elect, Claudia Sheinbaum for breaking all odds to win the heated elections.

“Congratulations, Ms. Sheinbaum on a landslide victory shattering gender barriers and being elected Mexico’s First Female President!” Kihika posted on her social media platform.

Ms Sheinbaum, a former energy scientist, has promised continuity, saying that she will continue to build on the “advances” made by Mr López Obrador, further building on the welfare programmes which have made the outgoing head of state very popular.

She told cheering voters: “For the first time in the 200 years of the [Mexican] Republic, I will become the first woman president of Mexico.”

While Ms Gálvez conceded defeat after Ms Sheinbaum’s unassailable lead in the polls was announced, she has since described the campaign for the presidency as an “unequal competition against the entire state apparatus dedicated to favouring its candidate”.

She said it was an achievement not just for her but for all women.
