Causalities of Katangi market accident along the Kitui-Machakos Road will have relief of paying their medical bills after Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti waived all medical fees.

This was announced earlier today by County Health CEC Daniel Yumbya.

The accident claimed nine lives while thirty others are admitted in various hospitals in the County after a 41-seater Matatu heading towards Machakos from Kitui rolled several times near river Athi at Katangi.

Eight people, among them 7 adults and a child, died on the spot, while the driver died on arrival at the Machakos Level 5 hospital.

Dr Yumbya on Tuesday said the total number of patients taken to Machakos level 5 was 35, where four among them are in critical condition and have been unmarked as they cannot speak.

Twenty-four other casualties are also receiving treatment for serious injuries but are in stable condition.

Yumbya also confirmed that they have recalled all the medical officers who were at home.

“All relatives of the affected casualties will have to first visit a desk that has been set for them for counselling and as of now the casualty has been closed for visitors.” He said.

Machakos County Commander Patrick Lobolia  said the accident occurred after the driver lost control after failing to negotiate a corner while descending towards river Athi which made the forty-one sitter Matatu to roll several times.
