The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has initiated an inquiry into the shooting of a demonstrator on Thursday by an individual suspected to be a law enforcement officer.
This follows the death of a protester who was reportedly killed during the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations in Nairobi on the same day.
Rex Kanyike Masai was purportedly gunned down by the police amid the protests in Nairobi. In a statement released on Friday, IPOA indicated that an investigative team has been in contact with Masai’s family.
“The Authority has recorded the demise of Masai allegedly due to police gunfire and the severe injuries sustained by other protesters, as well as police personnel.” IPOA chairperson Anne Makori stated.
As per IPOA, the National Police Service Act and service standing orders stipulate that the level of force used by an officer should correspond to the objective, the gravity of the offense, and the resistance of the individual involved.
The authority commended the demonstrators for engaging in peaceful protests without weapons. It also praised the National Police Service for demonstrating restraint, unlike in previous instances.
IPOA urged the police to continue exercising restraint and encouraged the public to maintain peace and abide by the law.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Masai’s family, friends, and all affected Kenyans,”Makori expressed.
She reaffirmed the authority’s dedication to independence, impartiality, fairness, and objectivity in all its endeavors.
IPOA initiated a surveillance operation to monitor police behavior during the widespread protests against the Finance Bill, 2024 on June 18, 2024.
The shooting occurred around 7 pm along Moi Avenue. An aerial footage captured the moment of the shooting.
