Judy Thongori to be laid to rest on Wednesday

Late renowned family lawyer Judy Thongori will be buried on Wednesday in a private ceremony.

The interment will occur after a service at the Nairobi Chapel along Ngong Road at 10 am.

In an obituary published today by her family, it was indicated that family and friends will be meeting today and tomorrow at 5:30 pm at the All Saints Cathedral for prayers.

“Family, friends, and colleagues will be meeting for prayers on Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21, at 5:30 pm, at the All Saints’ Cathedral, Nairobi,” her family stated.

The pioneer family lawyer and founder of Judy Thongori and Company Advocates died last week in India where she had been taken for emergency treatment.

In her legal practice, Thongori prosecuted several landmark cases.

She successfully sued the government over its failure to achieve 30 per cent women’s representation in leadership.

In 2013, she contributed to the development of the Matrimonial Property Act as well as the development of the Marriage Act, which became law in 2014.

Thongori joined the bar in 1988 and established herself as a family lawyer based in

Nairobi.

She was conferred the rank of senior counsel in 2020 as part of the third cohort and was the first woman to be inducted into the Roll of Honor of the Law Society of Kenya in

2023.

She was accredited to the Mediation Accreditation of the Judiciary and was part of the

Chief Justice’s Committee to set up the family Division in the High Court and has been a

Member of the Bar-Bench Committee.
