Kenya Airways (KQ) has resumed direct flights between Nairobi and Maputo, the capital of Mozambique with three flights weekly on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
Launching the service at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were prominent figures including KAA Chairman Caleb Kositany, Principal Secretary of Transport Mohamed Daghar, Principal Secretary of Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’Oei, Ambassador of Mozambique to Kenya Jerónimo Rosa Joao Chivavi, and Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka, among other dignitaries.
The revival of this crucial route responds to the increasing demand for connectivity between East and Southern Africa.
This move by Kenya Airways enhances regional connectivity, strengthens economic ties, and promotes tourism between Kenya and Mozambique.
Kositany expressed his excitement, stating, “This is a significant step towards bolstering our regional connections and fostering economic growth. We are thrilled to see Kenya Airways expanding its horizons and offering more travel options for our passengers.”
The new route complements KQ’s existing service to Nampula, Mozambique, further solidifying its regional presence.
Beyond Maputo, this expansion is part of KQ’s broader network strategy for 2024, which also includes increased frequencies to popular destinations like New York, Paris, Lagos, Accra, and Freetown.
The ceremony concluded with the official flag-off of the flight, symbolizing a new era of connectivity and cooperation between Kenya and Mozambique.
Kenya Airways’ focus on expanding its routes is a positive sign of recovery and growth in the aviation industry.
“We look forward to celebrating more such milestones in the future,” Kositany said.
