Kenya Medical Association to Challenge Introduction of Electronic Tax Invoice System in Health Sector

The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) has announced its intention to take legal action against the implementation of electronic tax invoice management systems in the health sector by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

KMA plans to file a petition this week and is urging KRA to immediately withdraw the system, which was introduced through the Finance Act of 2023.

The association argues that the implementation by the tax authority violates the constitution and breaches confidentiality, as the captured information could compromise privacy.

KMA asserts that exposing Kenyans’ data on the system poses a significant risk of abuse by unauthorized parties.

Furthermore, the medical professionals, led by the association’s president, Dr. Simon Kingondu, and CEO, Dr. Brenda Obondo, highlight potential diplomatic repercussions, as doctors often treat foreign nationals residing in the country who may object to their data being included in the system.

They criticize the government for introducing the initiative without engaging in public consultation.
