Kenya Reaffirms Commitment to Ending HIV on World AIDS Day 2024

By Shadrack Nyakoe

Kenya marked World AIDS Day 2024 with a strong commitment to eliminating HIV as a public health threat. The national event, held at Nyayo Stadium, brought together key government leaders and health sector stakeholders.

Cabinet Secretary for Health, Deborah M. Barasa, led the event alongside Principal Secretaries Mr. Harry Kimtai (Medical Services) and Ms. Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards), as well as Director General for Health, Patrick Amoth. Partners in health also joined to commemorate the day.

Barasa highlighted the importance of engaging men and boys in the fight against HIV, urging them to challenge stigma and take leadership roles in promoting health-seeking behaviors. “The fight against HIV is a collective effort, and men and boys must be champions for change,” she said.

Kenya has achieved notable milestones in its HIV response. By the end of 2023, 98% of adults living with HIV were on treatment, with 97% achieving viral suppression. New HIV infections declined by 83% over the past decade, and AIDS-related deaths dropped by 64%.

However, challenges persist, particularly in addressing care gaps for children, young people, and men, who remain disproportionately affected. Dr. Barasa called for increased efforts to close these gaps.

Looking ahead, she outlined Kenya’s strategic plan to achieve a self-reliant HIV response by 2030. The adoption of innovative solutions, such as long-acting injectable cabotegravir for HIV prevention, is transforming care delivery in the country.

Dr. Barasa also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage (UHC), ensuring equitable healthcare access for all, especially in underserved areas. “We are dedicated to ensuring that every Kenyan has access to quality healthcare services, regardless of their socio-economic status,” she stated.

The event reinforced Kenya’s dedication to addressing HIV through innovation, equity, and community-driven efforts, with a vision of a healthier, HIV-free future.
