The Commission for University Education (CUE) unveiled its 2024-2028 Strategic Plan today, marking a significant step in transforming Kenya’s university education landscape to meet modern demands.

The event, held in Nairobi, was presided over by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba, who emphasized the importance of aligning Kenya’s university education system with national development goals and international standards.

In his address, CS Ogamba underscored that the new strategic plan aims to position universities as vital players in educational reforms, with a focus on Competency-Based Education (CBE), data-driven decision-making, and enhanced institutional capacity.

He highlighted the plan’s alignment with key government policies, including Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2019 on Education, which outlines the goals for higher education in fostering innovation, research, and skills development.

“The CUE Strategic Plan is not merely a roadmap for internal operations but a national blueprint guiding universities to prepare graduates with practical, industry-relevant skills,” said Ogamba.

He urged universities to align their curricula with CBE principles to ensure graduates meet current job market needs and called on CUE to work closely with institutions to improve governance, resource allocation, and accountability.

Key pillars of the strategic plan include strengthening the institutional capacity of CUE and universities, promoting data-driven decisions, and internationalizing Kenya’s university education to attract students globally.

Additionally, the plan emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusivity, aiming to make quality higher education accessible to all Kenyans.

“The success of this Strategic Plan will rely on the collaboration of all stakeholders,” Ogamba stated, calling on the government, private sector, and civil society to support the initiative.

The strategic plan, now officially launched, is seen as a crucial step towards building a robust university education system that aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 goals and meets global standards.
