In an effort to curb the prevalence of illegal mining operations across Kenya, the State Department for Mining, led by PS Mining Elijah Mwangi, joined forces with CS Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, H.E. Salim Mvurya, for a crucial meeting with the Mining Police Unit.
Illegal mining has emerged as a significant liability to Kenya’s economic transformation, depriving the government, counties, and communities of essential royalties and taxes. Beyond economic concerns, these illicit activities pose grave threats to environmental conservation, leading to wanton degradation of Kenya’s natural landscapes and ecosystems.
Moreover, the unregulated nature of illegal mining sites has resulted in safety hazards such as cave-ins, tunnel collapses, and fatalities. These incidents underscore the urgent need for stringent regulations and enforcement in the mining sector.
To address these challenges, a grace period was initially provided for all illegal mining operations to acquire the necessary permits and documents. However, with the expiration of this grace period, the Kenyan government has declared “total war” on illegal mining activities.
“The Mining Police Unit will supplement the efforts by our officers to enforce compliance to the full extent of the law,” stated PS Mining Elijah Mwangi. “The State Department for Mining is dedicated to completely eradicating this vice from the mining sector and ensuring that all mining operations conduct their activities within the confines of the law.”
H.E. Salim Mvurya emphasized the collaborative approach, stating, “The collaboration between different departments and the Mining Police Unit is crucial for effectively tackling this issue. We are committed to promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices that benefit both the economy and the environment.”
