With only 25 days left until the 2024 Paris Olympics Games, Kenya’s top sprinters are ramping up their training efforts, aiming to leave a mark on the global stage.
Leading the charge are Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala, along with Zablon Ekwam and Wiseman Were, who have qualified for the 100m, 400m, and 400m hurdles, respectively.
Ferdinand Omanyala, a standout in the 100m, is eyeing a podium finish. He expressed confidence in his new training regimen, devised by his coach, Geoffrey Kimani. “There is a model that I have been taught, I was a bit scared but I tried it in the trials and it worked, meaning I’m adopting that model. So, I’m hoping to see how I’m going to run with that model when we are under pressure,” Omanyala stated.
Zablon Ekwam, who will compete in the 400m, highlighted the importance of his upcoming races in Belgium and Italy for assessing his readiness. “We are just trying to sharpen the edges to ensure we get the speed right. I’m having two races in Belgium and Italy. Those races are going to show me exactly where I am,” he explained.
Wiseman Were, a bronze medalist in the 4x400m relay at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, is optimistic about his chances in the 400m hurdles. “This season we have managed to run 48, looking to Paris with good race plan and the speed we are going to put in together, I’m going to get a 47. I’m looking forward (to) seeing myself in finals. I’m set and ready to go,” he said confidently.
The Kenyan sprinters are scheduled to depart for Miramas, France, next Wednesday to continue their intensive training camp, aiming to fine-tune their preparations and achieve peak performance in Paris.
As the countdown to the Paris Olympics continues, Kenya’s sprinting trio is focused and determined, ready to showcase their speed and skill on the world’s biggest athletic stage.
