By Shadrack Nyakoe

After Korogocho MCA Absolomon Onyango was voted as the best performing in Nairobi, Corporate Watch went round Korogocho Ward to find out why the legislator has become more famous and why he was voted as the best performing legislator.

Absolomon who is popularly known as Matach was awarded by Star Brand pollstars as the best performing MCA in terms of his connection with the electorates, promised fullfilled and participation in community projects.

He was accorded the award for most Transparent leader in Bursary Allocation after adopting a fair accessibility process in bursary allowance allocation.

The ward has hard poor roads and lack of street lighting with some of the roads having been invaded by criminal gangs at night to target residents heading back home at night.

For now, Mama Ng’endo Road that links Korogocho and Dandora have had been tarmaked and street lighting done. This is a milestone achievement according to a resident Mary Anyango.

“You know Dandora and Korogocho are never good places once their darkness and the roads on bad condition but now we have light and the road is nyweeeee,” she said to imply that the road is easy to use now.

Glory/BlueBar road that has also been in bad state for over 25 years has been tarmacked to link up residents to the main market in Korogocho.

Other successful projects include the Ngomongo Level 2 Perimeter Wall, the Early Childhood Development Centre at Ngunyumu and a master class Korogocho Community Stadium that has been ongoing and will help in supporting local sports activities.

The MCA has also managed to lobby the county and relevant partners to put up an ICT gun at Daniel Comboni Primary.

The developments have helped improve trade in the main Korogocho market that has for long been avoided by locals over criminal activities.

Korogocho neighbors Babagogo,Mowlem and Dandora area that also have a history of criminal gangs.

According to Absolomon, his commitment to change the state of affairs in the slum area is inspired by the hardship he went through growing up as a young man from a humble background.

” Life was always like hell in a cell here and we have had leaders come and go without any meaningful impact,”

The MCA says most Non Government Organisations ( NGOs) have always taken advantage of the sad state of affairs in slum areas to extort money from sponsors and is calling on elected leaders to work together and tirelessly in fixing problems.

“We have to fix our education system, our health standards, and guarantee safety to our people,” he said.

He thanked Korogocho people for trusting him and making him the best
