Members of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) remain steadfast in their strike action as they push for the full implementation of the Machakos Return to Work Formula (RTWF) agreed on September 26, 2024.
UASU officials commended members’ unwavering commitment to the strike and urged them to stay the course to achieve their demands.
In a recent parliamentary session with the National Assembly Education Committee (NAEC), UASU addressed the misinformation they claim the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) has circulated.
The union emphasized its commitment to transparency in negotiations.
Meanwhile, UASU leadership criticized University of Nairobi’s (UoN) Acting Vice-Chancellor for allegedly attempting to intimidate lecturers and students by instructing them to clock into lecture halls, calling the move an affront to academic freedom and a misguided form of coercion.
Dr. Maloba Wekesa, UASU’s National Secretary, denounced the Uon action, stating, “Lecturers are not wage workers required to clock in, and students are not inmates to be herded into classrooms.”
Wekesa asserted that UASU members stand on “the right side of history,” defending academic freedom and refusing to succumb to administrative pressure.
The UASU strike continues, with members rallying around the slogan: Solidarity Forever.
