Majengo youths set ablaze police station, two vehicles following shooting incident

Angry youths in Majengo set the area police station on fire after demonstrations over the fatal shooting of a form-three student.

The angry mob, who were questioning why the young man identified as Ibrahim Ramadhan Chege was shot, also burnt two police vehicles as they lit bonfires on the road.

Anti-riot police officers were dispatched in the area as they lobbed tear gas at the protesting youths, even as tension in the area remains high.

The relentless youths have not faltered and continue to cause chaos in the Majengo area, with several neighbouring communities also affected by the riots.

Reports indicate that several people have been injured from the protests and are hospitalized as the police continue to ensure that peace is restored in the area.

Police sources indicate that the riots began yesterday after the 17-year-old whom the youths claim was shot by the police succumbed to head injuries while being taken to Mama Lucy hospital.

The Source revealed that an undercover officer was arresting the high school student whom they claim was found in possession of bhang but resisted by shouting ‘Allah Akbar’ which attracted his Muslim counterparts who started pelting stones at the police.

The undercover officers sought assistance from their Majengo colleagues, but they were overpowered by the angry youths, forcing an officer to shoot in the air.

“He had cannabis kept in strap bag he was carrying. The suspect resisted and raised alarm by shouting Allah Akbar which attracted other Muslim youths who started pelting stones at the officers,” Our source stated.

The officers managed to escape the rowdy youths after the air scare shot, but one of the officers sustained injuries during the scuffle.

“Police Constable Mohamed Muktar sustained injuries on the left hip, the back and cut on the left forearm while one youth Ibrahim Ramadhan Chege sustained head injury and was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while on the way,” Source added.

The riots come at a time when Kenya is already grappling with the effects of suspected extrajudicial killings.
