Public transportation is the most used mode of travel by the majority of Kenyans, with buses being the most preferred for upcountry trips.

In 2022 alone, 11,969 minibuses (15-33 seaters) and 11,699 buses (34 and above seaters) were issued road transport licenses.

According to the Economic Survey 2024 by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), road transportation generated Ksh2.6 billion in 2023, of which passenger traffic accounted for Ksh1.4 billion.

The survey also shows that there were 9,960 road accidents in 2023, resulting in 10,762 people being seriously injured countrywide.
