In a bid to address the alarming rates of road accidents, Kipchumba Murkomen, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, has unveiled a series of reforms in the transport sector.
These changes aim to mitigate road carnage and enhance safety across the country’s road network.
Murkomen disclosed that these reforms were formulated in consultation with his counterpart in the Ministry of Interior, Kithure Kindiki.
He emphasized the need for collaboration between the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service (NPS) to ensure effective enforcement of traffic regulations.
“After consultations with my colleague in the Ministry of Interior and National Coordination, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, we are instituting a mechanism to enhance collaboration between NTSA and NPS for more efficient enforcement,” stated CS Murkomen.
He further announced the reinstatement of joint operations between NTSA and traffic police officers to enforce traffic safety measures promptly.
Moreover, Murkomen directed the immediate resumption of re-testing for all Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and heavy commercial drivers, a measure previously postponed.
Additionally, he mandated medical testing for all drivers before the renewal or issuance of driving licenses.
In response to recent tragic accidents, Murkomen urged NPS and NTSA to intensify their crackdown on unroadworthy vehicles nationwide.
Expressing condolences to the affected families, he reiterated his commitment to preventing similar incidents in the future.

“On behalf of the Ministry and myself, I extend heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims. We wish a quick recovery to those injured in the recent accidents,” Murkomen stated.
These directives come in the wake of a devastating accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, which claimed eleven lives and left twenty-one others injured.
Another accident in Bomet resulted in five fatalities, prompting Interior CS Kindiki to announce forthcoming measures to tackle road carnage and curb the menace of unroadworthy vehicles.
“We are implementing nationwide law enforcement measures targeting traffic offenses, drunk driving, and unroadworthy vehicles,” Kindiki affirmed.
